Where were Lorain's PARENTS?

When I woke up Wednesday morning I did my usual, "Ricky, Rashay you guys up!" I walked through the house ranting about how they are seniors in high school and I shouldn't have to be making sure that they get up every morning on time for school. Getting up at 6am to make sure your kids get off to school, I know you are probably thinking that is what parents are suppose to do, right? According to Wes Fleming author, parent, there are seven emotional needs of a child that need to be met in order to build a strong foundation. He used the acronym PARENTS which include Protection, Acceptance, Recognition, Enforced Limits, Nearness, Time, and Support. I sat down and read my newspaper as my kids continued to get ready at a snails pace. It wasn't a surprise to read that the Lorain city school levy failed but I was shocked by how many 'no' votes there was. I sat there and in my head said, WOW!...Words of Wisdom: It is my opinion that the focus should and always be on providing OUR children with a quality education this in return builds a strong foundation for the city of LORAIN. Protection, Acceptance, Recognition, Enforced Limits, Nearness, Time and Support is what we all have to do even when it calls for us to get up at 6am.

  1. If your child gets an allowance, but consistently squanders it on candy and video games, then comes to you broke when he wants to go see the movies with his friends, do you just hand him the money, no questions asked? Or do you teach him a lesson to budget his income better, and make him miss the movie?

Right now, lots of Lorain residents see the school board as spending money on too much administration, and cutting teachers and educational help when things get tight. When they start doing the right thing, voters will open their wallets to them again.

  2. People say they care about our futures, which is our CHILDREN. So,I ask do we squander our CHILDRENS future to teach the administration(in your opinion) a lesson! Let's not play with our CHILDREN and let's do the right thing!

  3. The community was so passionate about plots of land and were a high school will be,yet when it comes to securing the ability of our children to learn in a class with the adequet amount of teachers to class rooms, the support and passion seems so diplaced and unbalanced. We as a community should support our children even though some may disagree when it comes right to it. The Levy being turned downed by the community. HMMM, who suffers? Our neighbors and our children that teacher in the balance could be the same person you just saw at the teacher conference or supporting our children at a sporting event. As HIStory has shown over and over again educators in our school system is the second biggest influence in our childrens life.I wish we couldve shown collectivly as a community how much we really do support them and not just in words...

  4. Sorry Craigsue, but my children are not in this school system anymore. The superintendent has 2 secretaries making $56,000 apiece. Two of 'em. Could've kept a teacher if she got rid of one. You do the math, and explain why that makes good fiscal sense.

  5. To blindly pass a levy based on "it's the right thing to do" is insane.

Getting people in an economically depressed city to dig deeper into their pocketbooks is a daunting task, but that is the responsibility of the BOE and administration. Quite honestly, it appears they didn't get the job done.
